Christopher, wonderful article! Humans will always anthropomorphize things, especially human communications. The issue I have with emoji is they can communicate ambiguous intents. We are tuned to 41 facial muscles that shape nuanced intents. Ability to transmit this is powerful.

Christopher, for example: levator labii superioris alaeque nasi is not communicated in emoji and is quite important in transitions to humor or perhaps something hurtful. A frontalis pars lateralis facial movement may be all that is needed to change a comment from hurtful to humor
