I bet you could line up 100 Amazon employees from across their business and ask them to name 10 Alexa skills created by non-Amazon people or companies, and 90% couldn't do it. Not a sign of the apocalypse. Just a sign of how fast things have moved to date.

As things slow down, errors get magnified. Amazon hasn't slammed the door on privacy concerns - there's still lingering issues like inability to completely delete voice history and concerns groups like the CCFC have about Alexa and children. Bezos can't lead the way on these.

Meanwhile, all the breadth of the 2017-18 period - the Echo Buttons, the Echo Look, etc - haven't been followed up with depth of a killer app or two. Instead, it appears Amazon is buckling under the weight of numerous initiatives without requisite follow-through.

Google's made mistakes of its own. The botched launch of Duplex was probably far more impactful than we realized. That was supposed to be an important next step for voice - meaningful layering of new AI functionality. Ended up spooking people and setting things back 6-12 mos.

Samsung's entrance into the market was well-timed. They're the
#VoiceFirst blue ocean of opportunity. As I've stated before, Amazon vs. Google now becoming Amazon vs. Google vs. Samsung for developer attention and resources is a powerful change and boosts the entire market.3 replies 2 retweets 10 likesShow this thread -
Microsoft is embracing its restrained role for Cortana, which appears to be working out OK. Cortana, in our own studies, has performed admirably compared to Alexa, Google Assistant, and the others. Even Siri is rebounding, lifting up out of total ineptitude and becoming useful.

The conclusion is that calling the current period a "trough of disillusionment" seems a little inaccurate. There may be temporary disillusionment by the earliest of adopters. But the masses were bamboozled by progress the last year or two, & need this lull to catch their breath.

I stated in a different Twitter conversation that the area where impact will be felt next is likely to be healthcare. The Voice of Healthcare Summit (
@TheVOHSummit), and putting that program together, showed me there is no sign of slowing down there at all. Full speed ahead.1 reply 1 retweet 7 likesShow this thread -
I'd invite the
#VoiceFirst community to weigh commentary about lack of adoption, underperforming trends, etc against the realization of just how far things have come in the last two years. Long way to go. But worth keeping the history in mind.#VoiceFirst3 replies 1 retweet 18 likesShow this thread -

Robert, thank you sir. Indeed. The phases will be equally interesting and in some ways logarithmically more important. The amazing @bmetrock is so on target. I know so many things that can avoid the deepest part of the close winter but many folks need the ears to hear.
