Voice UI folks: making voice assistants female is obviously problematic, but curious whether there's something in a higher-timbre voice being easier to hear over ambient noise?

I remember reading about some early voice research that recommended using female voices over male voices, but I can't for the life of me remember where I read it or what the argument was.

Terry, thanks for asking! There is a lot of research on this but my fundamental basis is the voice of survival is the voice of our mom. We hear it in the womb a few months in development. When we are born, we echo locate her in a crowd. Not know her voice means we may not survive

Terry, thus we are hard wired for the tone, timber and prosody that we equate to the voice of mom. Thus subconsciously we are all biased to this effect. I think it is best to look at this as first principles in any #VoiceFirst plan.
