Current #VoiceFirst platforms have a multi-modal Ganzfeld effect on the user's context and continuity of conversation.
This is why it is not a conversation when no wake word is issued as in Google “Continued Conversations”.
They are not conversations, it's Q&A. It's a dead end.https://twitter.com/BrianRoemmele/status/1104451377470746624 …

For sure, the systems impose constraints and discovery is hard. Can you help me understand how the Ganzfield effect applies to that? With my 30s Wikexpertise it seems to relate to "unstructured, uniform stimulation field" which I struggle to relate to even basic voice exchanges.

Julian, thank you! I agree. The Ganzfield effect applies in many ways. One way is the
#VoiceFirst devices is there is a perceptual deprivation on the user and the context. There is also an amplification of “neural noise” when current approaches are used. Fixated on the arcane.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Lovely analogy to apply here with the Ganzfield perceptual experiment. James Gibson might call the current voice experience as impoverished and unnatural like the Ganzfield, while real human perception in the world is always rich, ecological, and contextual.

Lin, indeed! Said quite poetical. This is it precisely.

Thank you Brian. I can’t take credits. Spent my entire PhD studying the Gibsonian approach to perception with the founders of ecological psychology and affordance research. There’s a long history and community of scholars dedicated to this. Happy to share readings!

Lin, very interesting! I would love to learn more. I have researched Gibsonia concepts but there is so much to this.

@PsychScientists’a blog is a good start. Please cite them if not the sources :) They devote a lot of time communicating ecological theory and evidence to psychologists (and philosophers of science). I’ll dig into my PhD work to find readings directly related to voice design.1 reply 0 retweets 2 likes
Lin, thank you! I really appreciate it. I will dive in an cite when I find something interesting.
