Rene, I am most interested in the new AirPods working with the W2 SoC with a version of Bluetooth 5. The W2 will have active “Hey Siri” and quite a bit of local voice processing for basic controls. Beyond that scope it will open a separate channel to iOS for Siri interactions.

W3 maybe? W2 is in Watch 3/4 and doesn’t have BT5 as far as I can recall. Usually the Siri engine is in the M-series sensor fusion hubs, be interesting to see how they transpose that to the W-Series. (Wow, so much alphanumeric soup!)

Bluetooth 5 is the other Bluetooth that's generally unrelated to audio. They have to squeeze in a tiny MCU or ASIC that runs the hotword detection with really low static power.

Bluetooth above 4.0 = LE. For headphones you have to be compatible with every Classic mode radio under the sun, so BLE Audio isn't really feasible.

Daniel, Indeed. You know I think Bluetooth 5 on AIrPods may be related to the bandwidth of 2 open channels simultaneously to the iOS device (perhaps both audio). This allows for active interactions without channel sharing. Also Distance from the iOS device could be “house-length”

Ignore the articles that are written about Bluetooth. They're not going to implement any of that.

Daniel, not sure I understand. Just looking at the challenges of an active wake word Siri and sharing the Bluetooth channel that is more efficient at Bluetooth 5 variant, than anything less.

Why would a radio be involved with listening to audio? :)

Daniel, great question. A non-local and complex Siri interaction will involve sending high resolution to the iOS device. A high chance (currently) to be while engaged in listing to music. The Apple way, would not to be to deaden the audio but to open a separate path for Siri.

That would be unrelated. If they wanted to improve their filtering for whatever reason, that would be orthogonal stuff. I would think the codec will also be unchanged.

Daniel, I hear ya. I guess we will see. Hope Apple chooses the right path for Siri and AirPods, they own the near-field in #VoiceFirst and this is the next path.
