How much of the explosion in podcasting is due to Airpods?

Naval, indeed! Very astute observation. This is actually a subset of what I call the #VoiceFirst revolution. I would also suggest the rise of the Amazon Echo devices in over 61% of US homes has brought podcasts to the main stream as well as the shortened form of Flash Brefieings.

I would assume the total number of people who: 1) own airpods 2) listen to podcasts regularly 3) use voice controls in a way that ties in to both airpods and podcasts, is quite low. I might be wrong or missing something?

Mark, great question. The fundamental interface to AirPods is becoming Siri. The use for Siri as control for selection and control is rising and will likely be reported at WWDC2019. At the same time Podcasts are becoming a big part of Echo use case.pic.twitter.com/B7gAygBiNE

Where are you getting the 61% #?

Bob, great question. This is from a study that will be published soon by a notable research company. I was given early access to some of the data. Holiday season 2018 raised the US home penetration considerably. I think many will be surprised with what they found.

A more interesting trend is how many people are now opting out of AirPods in noisy cities like New York because they let all outside noise in. I’m sure apple will address this at some point but currently using AirPods on the NYC subway is a big fail.

I would be astonished if more than a fraction of that 61% knew how to find a podcast via Alexa. But always happy to be astonished if your research proves otherwise…

Flash briefing completely diff from podcasting. Most people I know that have VDAs do not use them for podcasts, although I believe it’s the perfect use case on mobile. Only a matter of time but not yet.

I think Apple has been pushing podcasts forward for many years, I am not sure AirPods have done much.

Do we have statistics for podcast listening on "smart speakers" as an activity specifically? I remember reading that the most common activity by a big margin is listening to music.

Podcasts are certainly benefitting from everyone having wireless headphones but they’ve been exploding way before AirPods even came out.
