A bit of field research: Assume I have a device that doesn't connect to your body but can send speech in an inaudible way using sine-wave speech. 1) Listen to this 1st: http://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk//personal/matt.davis/sine-wave-speech/sws_d5.wav … 2) Listen to this 2nd: http://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk//personal/matt.davis/sine-wave-speech/clear_d5.wav … Listen to 1 again. Whoa, fascinating! 😱 But for me it seems to be the other way around than for other commenters: 1 was perfectly intelligible the first time, but was gibberish after listening to 2. Is this related to the Yanny/Laurel effect? 🤔

Florian, indeed! Interesting that you could hear it the first time. You are quite unique in my research. I may send you some of my files for you to test. They are a lot more advanced then these. I have to find a way to do this easily.

I'm not a native speaker of English, maybe that makes a difference? But sure, feel free to send me some files to test - Just shoot me a DM for my email address.

Florian, ahh! This will be interesting I have only tested a few multilingual folks. I may try this in German? Could be very interesting.

I have to add, I guess it it happens because our brains are used to listen to the sounds (cadence, rhythms or frequencies) of a language we frequently use. For example, Would a musician behave in a different way in a further test?.

Would people with English/UK accents be more likely to understand 1 w/o listening to 2 than someone in the USA? When I listened to 1, my first impression was that it's speech of sorts...a pattern of syllables.

Count on my for Spanish. I listened to 1 and was gibberish then listened to 2, and quickly realized, not sure if it is related to rhythms or cadence or tones, that 1 was the same without words. This is very nice.
