Dave, I hear ya. I had only ~50% success rate with this method. It is intuitive but for some reason I could not break the pair to the old charging unit until a full battery drain.

Not discounting your experience, I just don’t think it’s typical (but it is entirely possible that it was needed for some reason; maybe even buggy firmware that they fixed)

Dave, indeed. I think it is because I was taking a previously paired AirPod and making it become paired with another AirPod and charger.

Weird. I’ve done a full replacement, one device at a time (yes, Apple shipped three packages for all three pieces, using two different carriers!). Replaced a single AirPod later too, technically at an Apple Store but we just swapped the pieces and I did the rest myself.
