A lot has changed in the smart speaker in just the past year. Google is giving Amazon a good run at cheap speaker share. Most people are using these devices to listen to music. That's about it. Most don't see the point other than music.

Sure, but Amazon and Google were interchangeable in that post. They both have roughly the same (correct) strategy for the space. Apple does not. Everything in there is more true today, with the HomePod in market. And yes, points to the strategy shift on (major) display this week.

The piece is about how people will put these cheap speakers everywhere and use them for a whole lot more than just music. That clearly is not more true today than in 2017. Instead, it's the opposite.

And yet, look at where Apple’s music-focused speaker is... Which you likely can’t. Because you likely can’t find one in the wild.

Seriously the most frustrating Apple product I've owned in a long time, maybe ever. Query failure rate very high. Hasn't obviously improved AT ALL since it came out(!) except AirPlay 2 in apps. Can't stream WXRT! But when it works, sounds pretty damn good.

Folks, fully agree. I would go on to say that Apple was playing checkers with “service” while Amazon is playing 3D chess with a new #VoiceFirst platform that has 11,000 folks working on it exclusively. I spoke to this with @reneritchie here:http://vector.libsyn.com/bonus-conversations-with-ai-featuring-brian-roemmele …

What really bothers me about Apple’s strategy with #voicefirst is that it’s thinking in terms of its devices instead of in terms of the user’s perspective. For example, look at how many different ways there are to activate Siri:pic.twitter.com/p8jdC3tFir

Dave, great points sir! I love Apple deeply. Indeed it is evident that Apple has manifestly accepted maladvice about the true nature of the #VoiceFirst revolution. This is regrettable because it was Siri that started the revolution. Defending the indefeasible helps Apple not.
