I wonder how this links to environmental sustainability - since consumers currently express their wishes in this area via brand and shop choice. Will there be ‘ethical’ algos?

Chippy, awesome question and I have thought if this aspect for over 30 years. It will be a very complex and interesting shift of power with the prospect of Google sized companies being friend around it. Not likely to be a company we know today.

Brands communicate two aspects. The first, 'utilitiy values' a consumer is likely to get (say, clean floors for a detergent) is probably AI-ed easily. But Brands also communicate the emotion a consumer can get on using a product/service. Could AI address that

Hair, awesome points! Indeed they can and will. It will fundamentally make brands presets of magnitude more valuable. Entire industries will be formed around this.
