Imagine Apple acquiring Viv Labs, and then, two years later, allowing them on stage at WWDC to announce themselves as Viv Labs. I suspect this need for identity, rather than Apple not seeing the voice opportunity is why Viv ended up with the more compliant Samsung.

Richard, I hear ya. I suspect this accommodation was because of the nature and culture of the acquisition company. Clearly Siri Inc was acquired by Steve and was strongly supportive to maintain Siri as company within a company.
