Since the 1990s one of the hardest things I have to break to tech companies that I work with is my demonstration that their open office architecture vastly decreases collaboration + creativity. I show them how to fix it. This research paper confirms it: http://rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/373/1753/20170239 …

Brian, for your consideration, my critique of that study from a couple months ago...https://twitter.com/ChrisGeison/status/1021102120966107136 …

Maybe you've seen this study that open offices reduce face-to-face communication by 70%? As someone who’s led projects on the UX of the built environment, where we interviewed >100 ppl about their workplaces, this research is… flawed. /1 https://work.qz.com/1322146/a-harvard-business-school-study-found-open-plan-offices-have-a-surprising-effect-on-our-collective-intelligence/ …

Chris, thank you sir! So amazing insights here! I agree with your presentation. The point I may descent is on the actual culture of the company and the way these open spaces are designed. So many variables.

From my own experience, my most creative moments happen when I’m alone Agree with you that “open architecture” can decrease creativity🤔

I have yet to see a creative attempt to tackle the open office problem, I am sure that designers, architects, and human-factors people (cognitive scientists, ergonomists, etc) can do better without imposing impossible, impractical changes.
