Can you elaborate on the first point? Do you mean pre-announcing and launching something on a particular date?

First window, the theatrical release period
-
Ah, why would they wanna do that? If anything, they are trying to kill theatrical windows via original content & native distribution
-
It’s a massively lucrative opportunity that smart people have been chasing for 20 years in Hollywood (also the trickiest to navigate)

I think they tried social but it never really got traction. Or wasn’t executed well. There’s also some weird legal issues to sort through there based on an old ruling.
-
They did try it, and to my understanding it performed poorly. Turned out it did not really improve the core metrics they cared about on either discovery or engagement. Credit to them that they did not try and force it b/c it felt cool given the rise of social at the time.
-
Timing is everything, my sense is today with their enormous footprint a social API would yield positive results
-
Terrific tweet. I feel that with their 2000 taste clusters and all, their API can even power a dating engine:-)

do you think they eventually will
-
Unclear, they appear to be laser focused on their core, original content and international growth

No one’s seemed to mention the co-viewing yet but I see that as being a potentially interesting opportunity. Imagine what that could do for long-distance relationships/family situations? In marketing terms, imagine the kind of campaign they could run with that

-
Eh. I think the current system of solo watch + casual convo or social convo is perfect. Co viewing would be hard to message + distract from their main offering.
-
I’m not sure I agree with that. It would have to be done tactfully, of course. I’m imagining something where you could invite someone to a “viewing room” where it would simply match up the viewing times of the content for each person.
-
Agreed to disagree. I'm with Brian on all of these (though I think Netflix could benefit from more one-off 15-20 min content)
-
Agreed. I do admire their intense focus and it’s working well for them. It’s been interesting what they’ve done with Explained as shorter-form content, and I’d be interested in seeing how that’s done for them.
-
Funny enough Cineplex (Canadian AMC) set up a “shared” viewing experience for 50 Shades of Grey. The screened the film on Valentine’s Day in Vancouver and Toronto at the same time (accounting for time change) and promoted it to long distance couples.
-
Huh. Wonder if it was worth the squeeze.
-
The timing definitely didn’t help. One screening was at 4pm while the other was at 7pm. I personally think a more interesting option would be live streamed post-screening discussions/reactions. Something done for late night day one screenings with all the die hards.
