Society goes downhill when it pays more to manipulate people than to manipulate the objective world.

On street parking has ruined street photography in hundreds of cities. Some places are still beautiful because they do not have cars obscuring the view, especially in Japan, Portugal, Malta, Turkey.

If you figure out how to work the shower in under a minute, you didn't stay at a very nice place. If you failed to ever get the overhead showerhead to work and instead had to use the manually held auxiliary showerhead thing, wow, you must have paid a lot.

There seems to be a strong correlation between hotel quality and the level of confusion caused by their shower UIs. I think you can predict hotel quality just by asking how long it took a guest to shower.

Great tweet but in truth, the last decade of consumer VC investment can be modeled as “Manhattan as a service”, which only got off the ground because SF is such a suburban hellscape. And in classic disruptive worse-is-better iteration, those services now beat Manhattan in quality

I wonder how long AirBnb will insist on making "Experiences" a top-level element in their UI and making me sub-specify that I'm looking for an apartment with every search I do.

Dualism seems as implicitly alive and well as ever. It's the unstated assumption we don't know what to do without. From theologians to transhumanists, we just argue over implementation details.

I don't understand the instagram-able food thing. If a restaurant's food looks pretty in their photos, I look for somewhere else to go.

The downside of working on something that other people feel is important is you might start to believe it too. You might start to think you're a serious person living in a serious place doing serious things. And then you'll be a socially determined thing before you can look up.

Luck is just an umbrella for all of the things that we don't know. No one gets lucky in tic-tac-toe. Luck is necessary to the extent that it's impractical to be prepared in advance. Given the zeitgeist, it's probably right to assume more can be prepared than it may seem.

News and news-like-things are not primarily in the business of describing for you how the world is. They're primarily in the business of telling you how other people will be thinking about how the world is. Isn't that what you actually want more?

I normally think I'm deciding what I'd like to learn about next when I choose something to read. But the unexpected things I unlearn tend to be more interesting. It seems harder to choose what you'll unlearn.

In NYC rental ads, "charming" seems to indicate "smaller and weirder layout than you'd expect for this price."

Humans form organizations because they need them to satisfy psychological needs, not because the technology for sovereign individuals living on networks with low transaction costs didn’t exist.
