Correct. But my point is that Senate Republicans didn’t try too hard to stop him. And Democrats didn’t really try to stop McConnell in 2017. The reason is that both parties want simple-majority cloture for judicial nominees today (unlike in 2005).

Agreed. Both party’s leadership were complicit in stripping rank-and-file members of the right to fully participate in the process.

And they secure the support of the rank-and-file for limiting their participation in the Senate’s business by portraying the other side as villains who want to destroy America and suggesting that they are powerless to stop them.
