Look what arrived in the mail! My book 📚 co-edited by Drs Yoon Kang & Joe Safdieh (). Holding the book (which is about the size of my doctoral dissertation) is surreal. 😎 Kudos to the 69 authors & thx to Dr Carol Storey-Johnson for writing the forward.

  10. Different folks can have diff careers - why does it feel like the only way to be a physician-scientist is to live/breathe/eat science 100% + maybe throw in some clinical stuff. This definition is limiting/stifling for those who have talents in other areas too.

A1: for me it was definitely a lack of role models. Especially as a first gen applicant I had No one to look up to who had gone through the process.

Exactly! Getting my 1st faculty job this summer, and only now have an understanding of what 80/20 split is like. It took me 16 years since I interviewed for MD/PhD programs to figure it out! And guess what? I’m going to be a & not do 80/20 for now.

A1: not only financial barriers during the training but also long time to first “job” if doing the academic track. If your family isn’t independently wealthy, you don’t have the luxury to keep putting off getting a real salary.
