Bret Weinstein Retweeted Heather E Heying

And Heather's excerpt hints at another question: were the mice chosen for this experiment capable of illuminating an increased cancer risk? But the lab mouse "closet" is one the public isn't allowed to open--for our own safety, no doubt. There be dragons guarding the skeletons.https://twitter.com/HeatherEHeying/status/1019308739940179968 …

Yes: Wholly predictable. We underestimate the complexity of biological systems, and therefore the effects of our tinkering, at our peril. In a different lay-article addressing the same peer-reviewed research in Nature Biotechnology, there is this: https://www.statnews.com/2018/07/16/crispr-potential-dna-damage-underestimated/ … pic.twitter.com/dY7PzpbxQy

Was recently at a conference and saw report of different susceptibility to infection in classical lab mice vs more recently wild-derived mice. No consideration of telomere length even though it likely affects pathogenesis (PMIDs 20876312 and 25399821).

Not just an issue for drug discovery and cancer research, but also for infectious diseases. May hint at why so many antivirals/antibiotics fail to progress after animal model step.
