I find this genuinely fascinating. What do you mean by "retaking the left"? Why not focus on reclaiming the right, and getting rid of the xenophobia, populism, and disregard for the rules of liberal democracy?
I can't be part of retaking the right as I have never been on the right. I would, however, love to see a housecleaning across the board. What divides us is significant, in my experience, but is far exceeded by what unites us.
Imagine what it might look like if Bret acts the exact same way while speaking to and about folks he doesn't sense are in his IDW. So far, all civil discourses while disagreeing happen mainly in in-groups. Imagine if Bret simply extended his skill set.
So then a) what are the priorities? What is the biggest danger to liberal democracy? And b) who and how then shifts a political movement to address those priorities? And even if that works, is that enough to address a)? We (social sci) know a lot about a). Far fuzzier on b).
