Disturbing epiphany: postmodernism will always be in conflict with the real world. Not so in the virtual world. When our antagonists make insane claims about what 'is', they are not exactly crazy. They are dictating terms for the new virtual world. A man can be a woman, online

  2. Humans have analogs of hardware, firmware and software. And *all three* are products of adaptive evolution. Once we make eye contact with that, human nature--in all its glory and horror--becomes much simpler to understand.

  3. People are not choosing to want P or Q. They are simply wanting P or Q. These things may be consciously alterable, but it is a struggle against an evolutionary force. Why we ever have such conversations without acknowledging the Darwinian nature of the problem is a mystery to me.

We don't need new laws. This is a matter of personal culinary responsibility. Frying pans are the only shield we have against tyrannical abuses of Terms of Service. Without our pans, we'd be at the mercy of Twitter's arsenal of fully-autocratic weapons.

This is no joke, Ben. Cast iron pans were used in 23% of suicides in the tri-state area (plus Ohio) in 2013 (the last year for which ferrous/culinary data is available). Brussels sprouts were used in 9%. 2.5% used both. Oddly, brussles sprout use is much more common in homicides.

    (2) you are moving me to the left with powerful rational arguments such as "regulations are not inherently oppressive, they can be liberating." That alone moves me left because it's true on a fundamental level.

Very cool strawman, Kevin. Not so cool dressing him up in my clothes, however. Please bring them back inside before it rains.

  13. In 2018 we turned a corner--the phony narrative began to give way: The left isn't dead. It is fiercely divided. And the center isn't about centrists or centrism. It is where good faith players of every stripe come to discuss the tensions that shape society.

  16. Plot twist: What Lebron James said wasn't offensive so much slightly misleading at a factual level. I don't know where got his info, but Wikipedia suggests that in America, it's Indians who are the serious earners. But who knows? Maybe James' data is more current.

  17. When you see one of these head-scratchers, don't process it literally. Think of it as a "flex". If one can force someone to beg for public forgiveness, they must be powerful. The bigger the fish, the greater the apparent power. It's bullying, and we have to break its grip.

  21. Exactly right. I would argue it is especially interesting in light of the informal agreement that held for decades over the use of the n-word. There is a cautionary tale in the recent breakdown of that agreement. I'd be interested to find out if we see the same picture.
