It’s kind of horrifying that a statement like this now is a heroic act, but it is, and those who care about movies and art and free self expression all thank you for it and for courageously holding a light up for us all.

Maybe “mindless, regressive, identity politics groupthink” is what led to the movie being produced in the first place?

1. Being persuaded that it's a weak film isn't groupthink 2. A call to resistance doesn't persuade anyone that the movie was artful

Agreed. There’s no way Three Billboards is better than Dunkirk.

Or SHAPE OF WATER or LADY BIRD... or the much overlooked GOOD TIME!

I don’t think it is mindless, regressive, identity politics groupthink to contextualize the public criticism of an otherwise accoladed work of art.
-
But the criticism is unfounded and based on identity politics and not aesthetic which is what visual art is all about. You know, empathy, spending time in someone else’s shoes. The irony is not lost on me.
-
The criticism may be partially political but I also see plenty of points being made about the style and storytelling structure. All of those tied together don’t seem unfounded to me. Also isn’t visual aesthetic in a film different from creating/evoking empathy?
-
This is why ideology makes bad art. It’s so easy to point a finger and say “look at what they do, look how bad they are”. It’s the worst kind of reductionism.

Why the fuck are movies being roped into politics now? Filmmaking is supposed to exist outside of the political stream and work as commentary on society or just be just plain fun! Now everyone wants to turn movies into propaganda for their horseshit agendas.

3 Billboards isn't even a really good movie - I wanted it to be but I didn't find it to be...

Take the controversy away and it’s still not a good film so what are we even talking about?
-
You’re insane. It’s great
