As an aside, they had trouble enticing enough extras for the race sequence (filmed over two weekends in fall 1978).
I was an extra in the stadium race scenes. They kept moving us around the stadium. You'll notice way more kids than the real race gets.
If you look closely, at the top of the frame in some shots during the race, there are empty seats. (1)
Recently drove around BTown looking for locations. Hasn't changed too much, but the factory is closed, downtown & campus still gorgeous
