If The Oscars insist on a dumb Best Popular Picture category (so Black Panther can win something) then they must return to only FIVE NOMINEES for the BEST PICTURE category. Only two-three movies a year are barely worthy but does AMPAS really want to nominate a potential TWENTY?pic.twitter.com/Uq4YV4ynCF

If you add in animation you’re up to 25. This is all about ratings not excellence.

Cannes has always been a truer metric of artistic merit anyway. Oscars often feels so random in their selections.

The idea of a Best Popular Picture category at the Oscars is a perfect example of the “dumbing-down” of our country. Awards for popularity have their place & time, like at the People’s Choice Awards. The Academy should hold itself to a higher standard. This is asinine pandering.

Back in the day, "Ben-Hur", "Braveheart", "Gone with the Wind", "Gladiator", "From here to eternity", "West side story", "The Silence of the lambs", "Titanic", etc... were rather popular. But that was when films were important. Today if everyone's special, no one really is.

They did it because ratings were slipping; that’s about the level of legitimacy the Oscars hold these days.

The Oscars have an embarrassing track record historically. Like Room getting nominated over Straight Outta Compton. Or films like Pulp Fiction losing to Forrest Gump. Goodfellas to Dancing With Wolves. Al Pacino losing for The Godfather to Joel Grey in Cabaret.

Yeah, of all marvel movies they're going to award black panther, not infinity war which brought a literal billion and demonstrated how economically powerful popular pictures are to the modern film industry, yeah you got it in one

If they were really serious about the merit and credibility of the work, they’d have a third party group vote on their output, not the industry itself.

"Dumb best popular picture" is too politically incorrect. It's better to name the category "lobotomy delight" The word delight obscures lobotomy.
