And I don't suppose I need to go on at any length about my position on 'how bad was/wasn't the fall of Rome in the West?' because the way my patrons are voting, I think that's likely to be on the blog before too long.

Yeah, while I think there are some important caveats and complications, I generally regard B. Ward-Perkins' The Fall of Rome (2005) to have been fatal to the 'actually it was fine' argument, though I find this hasn't stopped that view being common wisdom among many medievalists.
