If you will forgive a personal observation...I find it strange that it seems like no one is happy with the direction of our contemporary culture, but the response is always "we need to do what we are doing, just more so" as if speeding up the car will change where the road leads.

In the old game Populous, I found you could accelerate growth by uprooting people the moment they rooted. Class society exploits our ability to respond to crisis, through perpetual crisis. It's hard to see a way out of crisis that avoids the complex array of traps.

'Class society' as opposed to what, precisely? I find it hard to attribute particularized evils to generalized social realities. That doesn't necessarily mean generalized social realities are good, mind you; but if the reality is generalized, its evils ought to be too.

Honestly, I don't know if I can be precise about what I'm comparing it to. I've got to read Graeber and Wengrow's book, but my impression is one of the things they're arguing against is a simplistic model of non-class societies, anyway.

One thing I feel the need to note here is that assuming that non-state and non-agricultural societies were non-class societies seems foolish. Nomadic, non-state Eurasian pastoralists not only had class divisions, they had slavery institutions.
