The show is based on the popular multiplayer game League of Legends (which I once played, but no longer do). Knowing the game isn't necessary for the show (though since the show is a prequel, knowing where the characters end up does make it more poignant early on)
Honestly watching it makes me a bit sad that Riot hasn't spent their talents with more story-driven games (an actual game of League is nothing like the show), but they seem to be potentially turning in that direction. Whether or not that works our, Arcane is a triumph.
I certainly prefer Dota to LoL, but Arcane is excellent and much better than the Dota anime.
It apparently took like 6 years to bring this about. Because the systems you have in place to make 3-minute trailers don't scale well to a whole series. Meanwhile a very JRPG-structured thing based on the setting just came out from an external studio. So it's turning a bit.
Fascinating to see the history prof whose blog I follow have basically the same take on LoL as the one LoL YouTuber I follow. ...though I suppose I might indirectly select certain outlooks in the blogs/channels I follow, so maybe it's not really a surprise...
