Of course that doesn't disqualify the originals as art, but it speaks to the difficulty of critiquing toxic gender roles 'from the inside' as it were: parts of society will simply read the critique as glorification.

I don't think it's a failure, I think it's the point of the exercise. The compelling/mythologized qualities of these masculinities are acknowledged in order to subvert them. The viewer's attraction to them is a kind of complicity that should provoke reflection
