Yes! This is so confusing to me. I absolutely believe my work matters - my scholarship, my public engagement and outreach, my teaching. If I thought this didn't matter, I'd go do something else! There are far easier ways to get a paycheck!
I cannot imagine sticking it out in an academic job while thinking that nothing I did mattered. Honestly, a professor who doesn't think their field matters probably should move on, for their own sake and for the field's sake.
