But it is also mindbendingly absurd to have academics clinging to jobs they hate when there are so many early career folks who long for those same positions.
At the same time, I can think particularly of a few professors who pointedly retired to make way for younger academics out of a sense of duty to the field. Punchline? None of them have been replaced, nor are they likely to be.
In the end, retirements aren't the problem: the lack of new hires is.
I know of some who pointedly didn’t retire because they were waiting until a time when they would be replaced. That time didn’t come.
