At the same time, I can think particularly of a few professors who pointedly retired to make way for younger academics out of a sense of duty to the field. Punchline? None of them have been replaced, nor are they likely to be.

This is pretty hard to take: "Perhaps the most-telling response: Not even 10 percent said they stay in academe because 'My work matters.'" They must have gone astray long ago if they completed a Ph.D. not believing their work mattered.

Yes! This is so confusing to me. I absolutely believe my work matters - my scholarship, my public engagement and outreach, my teaching. If I thought this didn't matter, I'd go do something else! There are far easier ways to get a paycheck!
