The people who talk about "restoring traditional masculinity" are just DEEPLY insecure about there own. Umberto Eco's 12th property also comes to mind.
The oddest thing is there are pop culture works that pay lip service to things like "warrior-poets" (Braveheart) or perfection of non-martial aspects (Last Samurai) but completely abandon those for the bulk of their runtime.

Warrior culture always seems to have an artistic aspect that gets lost in modern retelling. What I find fascinating is that prison masculinity, which is hyper macho and extremely violent, respects poetry as well. Rappers who can sing are well regarded. Real warriors love art.
I think it's helpful to see Tolkien's m-m platonic relationships through the lens of romantic friendship, a social standard in Western cultures in the 19th c. especially and very rooted in gender-segregated academic cultures (see also Boston Marriages).
