It might be time to put a look at Greek and Roman conceptions of masculinity on the to-do list. But for what its worth, I think we do, as a society, have a masculinity crisis, but it is almost the exact opposite of the crisis that folks are talking about.

You have politicians pining for the days of Manly Men who were Strong and Did Stuff, who champion an unemotional masculine ideal, but the manly men that did stuff in centuries past also wrote moving poetry, made beautiful art, felt and expressed deep feelings.

Marcus Aurelius was a book reader. George Washington liked to dance. Eisenhower painted landscapes. If such men would fail today's 'bro code' that should lead us to question the code; what we need is more honest, earnest, sometimes vulnerable men, not more empty machismo.

I really like that you enjoy breaking down toxic masculinity. I've read several of your blogs and I enjoy how you contrast toxic masculinity with the realities of masculinity in history.

I like that idea of an impoverished masculinity today. My own pet theory is that our “traditional” masculinity is more of a blue-collar non-educated version, stemming from the Great Depression and WWII. Older aristocratic forms were different (like those British WWI officers).

It never ceases to appall me that we have so very much wealth flowing through our universities and so very little of it devoted to sustaining the humanities. So much intellectual tradition is hanging by a thread, on the verge of being lost, requiring long years to rediscover.

The book "Jesus and John Wayne" might be the best recent take on the masculinity Hawley claims to defend. It stems less from actual strength & activity than from cultural revanchism & fear of lost status. (Kind of like a 20th-century political movement that shall remain unnamed.)
