My cats get *very* offended at the fall DST change, when dinner is suddenly an hour later.

My dog knows that she's fed every day at 8pm, which means she starts begging for food and acting like she's starving at 7:30pm. She also can tell when someone is leaving for a few days rather than a few minutes, and will start singing a dirge as soon as she sees it.

there's a theory that dogs and cats estimate progress of time basing on the smell (say, smell of their owners) "dissipation" over time. assuming it's true, it's possible that by 5PM the smell disappears completely, so there's no way for the cat to distinguish it from 6PM

I haven't heard that before - and I wouldn't think they need it. Animals, even insects, have excellent biological clock systems that work well at multiple scales (from minutes over days to years). Chronobiology is quite fascinating.

My cat does something very similar. My mom gets home only after 4pm. If she hears rattling of keys before that she doesn't care, if it's after that she immediately runs to the door, even if it's (usually) someone else.

Mine is the same but food. And yes always starting an hour before actual dinner time.

Orion can tell that it’s me driving the car and will meet me at the door. He ignores the car when herself comes home.

It's possible that Ollie has dramatically misunderstood what daylight savings time entails.
