2/ "Does consuming cultural representations of fascism allow us to re-experience fascism without consequences?" Many expressed their discomfort with films/series that divorced fascism from the Holocaust but also mentioned they didn't always pick up on fascist aesthetics.

3/ Then I showed a clip of Hitler's speech in Triumph of the Will followed by Admiral Hux's speech in The Force Awakens (this scene struck me as a very overt reference when I first watched the film). Great way to dissect fascist representations in popular media!

I’m fascinated by how much the Triumph of the Will staging of “people arranged in regimented squares before a stage” has become universal visual shorthand for “bad guys”...

I keep meaning to come back to this motif and talk about it more. I think it is precisely how unnatural it is - crowds do not organize themselves like this - that makes it intimidating and then of course Triumph of the Will's film-school prominence encoded it as a film motif.
