Thinking about LotR today (of course) and I was struck by the stunning misplaced arrogance in the Witch King's retort to Gandalf, "Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it?" Like, it sounds badass, but actually every part of that sentence is foolish...

In
@ann_leckie's The Raven Tower this is the foundation of divine magic -- anything a god says is by definition true, and if the god lacks the power to make reality conform, the god dies instead. So gods are VERY careful in their speech.Kiitos. Käytämme tätä aikajanasi parantamiseen. KumoaKumoa

One wonders what a Numenorean sorcerer seduced to Sauron's service understands Gandalf to be. He presumably grew up with some history of the 1st Age, then learned the "real" Morgoth-inflected version of events and personalities. Does he even know Gandalf is from the West?

His first hypothesis may be that Gandalf is like himself, but weaker, a Man who delved into sorcery to extend his life and power, but without the straight line to the top of being Sauron's lieutenant and the wearer of (as he'd see it) the strongest Ring but the One.

TLDR, Gandalf has the same powers as Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle (the book), but unlike Sophie, he knows it.

The Witch King is like a boss in an RPG, but Gandalf is way over leveled.

Also, the next line is “die now and curse in vain!” Gandalf’s curse is, “fall into the nothingness that awaits you and your master,” which happens the next time we see the Witch King. Gandalf commands the Witch King to go and die, and he immediately departs and finds Eowyn.

Very good thread! As
@tolkienprof has said many times, he is certainly right that it is his hour, just not in the way he expects…Kiitos. Käytämme tätä aikajanasi parantamiseen. KumoaKumoa

Love this
;Adding…In “Corvids of Corvus County” an alien technology plays the role of magic— and main characters wielding it are sometimes right, but not in the way they expect. E.g. Ethel in the “Em & Ethel Send It” and then “Silver Derby” @getcallinhttps://callin.com/?link=WpwTMnvxwW …Kiitos. Käytämme tätä aikajanasi parantamiseen. KumoaKumoa
