Thinking about LotR today (of course) and I was struck by the stunning misplaced arrogance in the Witch King's retort to Gandalf, "Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it?" Like, it sounds badass, but actually every part of that sentence is foolish...

Confrontations between magical beings of LotR are rare, but they all follow a similar set of rules: one being (often Gandalf) declares something as a fact ('you shall not pass' 'your staff is broken' 'you cannot enter here') and that *knowledge* is borne out.

The bridge breaks, the staff shatters, the horns call the Witch king away and he falls. Magical beings in LotR show their power by declaring a truth about the world and having the world reflect - even shift and change - to match that truth.

The Witch King calls Gandalf a fool, and he is wrong. Gandalf says, "You cannot enter here." And he is right. /end

Possibly my favorite scene from the books & biggest disappointment of the films! Especially after the thrilling way Jackson handled the balrog in fellowship.

To be fair, almost all of the Rohirrim charge in the movies is pure awesome. It would have been difficult to cut the charge simultaneous to the gandalf/witch king fight, which would need to happen at the gate.

Good analysis on this confrontation, but .... that is a load-bearing "few".

I think that is generous. Outside of the core Fellowship the films routinely lessen the attraction of key characters. Faramir not releasing Frodo, Treebeard needing to be tricked, Theoden fleeing to Helm's Deep and Denethor was sorely misused.

Heroes being unmoved by fearsome threats or base motives is both a strength and weakness in the books. You basically need the supernatural palantirs or rings to even threaten their resolve. I get why Jackson wanted to change this, but he failed to replace w/ something better.
