Is getting a PhD worth it if I don't want to go into academia? I know that's a rather vague question and this probably isn't the best medium to ask it in.
So you have to ask 1) is it required to do a job you want to do and have a reasonable of chance of being able to do (probably not)? or 2) are you just wealthy and doing it for the joy of becoming an expert in something? If both (1) and (2) are 'no' then 'no.'

I'll give this a read over, thank you. I'm currently in the last year of my masters (in history) and I'm still trying to figure out if a PhD is viable. My area of focus, history of firearms, isn't a huge field so it's been tough to find an advisor I could research that under.
