Really seems like an inescapable law of gravity that people who critique film on YouTube must either end up situating their critiques within their own ever expanding video side plots, or else end up really as general documentarians who just occasionally discuss films.
Not a criticism of those folks, by the by; they should make what they like. But I tend to show up for the text/film criticism; the point at which the creator has an expanded universe with 'seasons' is generally the point at which I check out and look for someone else.
On the other hand I've been enjoying the increase in production value, costumes, and general aesthetics in video essays recently
I feel like RedLetterMedia's Half in the Bag is an active satire of this -- they have "plot" bumpers on their reviews that are deliberately extremely-low-effort nonsense.
What critics do you like (now or in their glory years)?
For film, @thelindsayellis , @FoldableHuman @patrickhwillems and @mikeyface all tend to say interesting and useful things in engaging ways. Also, somewhat bespoke to science fiction, but @sfdebris, particularly when he gets into how various works got made the way they did.
I mean, Lindsey still puts out great critiques, even if she's pivoted to more being a novelist
