Cole Wehrle is a board game designer that (surprisingly) has a Humanities background. He mentioned that the asymmetrical faction designs in Root are originated from his frustrations that many games tend to have a very limited way to describe how states and peoples are organized.

This made for an interesting listen and supplement to your blog posts. You deplored that CK2 doesn't include penalties for being at peace for too long, which I think is generally related to the absence of more ideological concerns around lordship and knightship in the game.

With the Holy Fury DLC (I think), they added warrior lodges and there is now the option of reforming a Pagan faith with an emphasis on warfare (see picture), although this is unfortunately absent from Catholic playthroughs.pic.twitter.com/hHJ9XIV8vP

I've tried to play Paradox games "tall" but it almost never works vs a good human opponent (and sometimes doesn't work vs AI depending on circumstances) so good job outlining that in your podcast.
