And as an aside, writerly thinking that thinks that clear, direct thesis statements are for school papers is silly. A good thesis statement, placed early on, can tremendously help a reader to understand an argument. And no one is persuaded of an argument they don't understand.
There are occasions when it makes sense to bury the lede, but they are few and even in my professional writing, I generally have a thesis statement if not a clear thesis sentence.
