I just realized that all this goes a *very* long way to explaining why the Assyrians only ever got a tenuous hold over Egypt and the Babylonians never did. Egypt fortified the f**king Sinai (no wood to build siegecraft) and neither empire above had a strong navy to bypass them.

If you have naval supremacy like the Persians or Macedonians did, you don't need to take those fortresses. You just bypass them and attack harbor settlements like Grant in the Vicksburg campaign.
