That essay is a part of a broader series discussing those tropes, but for the Dune fans, the interlude is probably the best place to actually enter the argument.

Well, yeah, except that, as a group, they were the heroes.

As I discuss, that's not an innovation, merely a continuation of the re-imagining of this classical trope to serve the needs of 19th century nationalism and romanticism.

Movie review forthcoming? There were a lot of, um, interesting battle tactics on display. (Overall a really excellent movie though, I think. Exceeds expectations)

As soon as I can get in a theater to see it. Probably next weekend.

In an oddly appropriate way, this reads like a fundamentalist theological essay. "All that matters is what the text says and the direct implication of those words, not what we might wish it to say, or imagine might lurk between the lines."

I can hear Catholic theologians - I'm sorry, the Bene Gesserit - stepping up to say "Actually, interpretation is difficult and far from ambiguous and this is why you need our millenia of continuous culture to help"

Hope I’m not spoiling the movie for you, but I loved your essay, was pretty skeptical how Villeneuve would handle this, and am glad to report he buried the Mirage, not his head, in the sand (sorry for the very bad pun; couldn't resist).

BTW, I am really curious about your claim that the Achaemenid Empire had managed a "power to power" transition. I was under the (perhaps wrong?) impression that it had serious internal instability issues nearly as bad as those of the Diadochi states that ultimately succeeded it.

It really feels like Herbert wanted both to have his cake of barbarian warrior heroes and to eat it by having their culture be seeded with fake religions that are callously manipulated by outsiders for their own ends and... I... I don't think that that's...good?
