Science People! Is there a technical term for a system in which two things evolve in response to each other? As in a predator and its prey evolving specialized responses to each other. My instinct is to call it 'evolution-through-opposition' but is there a specific name for it?
The thing I want to bring out here is how both 1) the system doesn't stagnate but 2) it produces very contingent results, because both sides aren't aiming for objectively optimal outcomes, but rather coming to new responses in a very particular environment of competition.
Mostly I want to avoid just calling it an 'arms race' - I want to reach past that metaphor.
Other than the dry 'coevolution' or the wonky 'Red Queen effect', the best I could come up with was 'reciprocal adaptation' which isn't used much as a primary term, but seems to capture the spirit more.
