It does argue against horse riding or chariots as the IE killer app though, right? And how viable would steppe nomadism be without riding horses?

Why should you need horses in steppe nomadism? The main problem of nomads is having their stuff transported, I assume, and horses are not the best choice there. When taking over the world - Hun/Mongol style -, horses may come in handy, though.

I'm basing this on
@BretDevereaux's very interesting blog post (I'm sure you'll find the premise a bit silly, but don't write it off based on that!):https://acoup.blog/2020/12/11/collections-that-dothraki-horde-part-ii-subsistence-on-the-hoof/ …1 vastaus 0 uudelleentwiittausta 0 tykkäystä -
Very interesting! Is it generally assumed that the Yamnaya nomads were mainly big game hunters? I always pictured them - without much thinking - as cattle nomads.

Yes, cattle nomads indeed. That's not in question.

(sorry, that perhaps sounded a bit dismissive and aggro, which was not my intention at all :-) But semi-nomadic pastoralism is the consensus)

I was responding to the article
@bnuyaminim linked, which seemed to focus on nomadic groups that lived mainly from big game hunting - so I thought, this might be a reason why horses are less necessary in a Yamnaya context than in the referred to groups.1 vastaus 0 uudelleentwiittausta 2 tykkäystä -
Yeah :-)

The second part is about sheep pastoralism in Mongolia, right? (I didn't go through the whole article again!)

Indeed - I just skimmed it (and did so again), bc I find it a very unpleasant read. But while skimming I didn’t find clues that you NEED horses for sheep nomadism, different from what the article says about big game hunting in North America.

You don't. Transhumant nomads herd sheep on foot all over the place. I discuss those patterns of non-nomadic herding here:https://acoup.blog/2021/03/05/collections-clothing-how-did-they-make-it-part-i-high-fiber/ …
