So my university does an 'employee appreciation day' which is seemingly always scheduled for fall break. So, you know, employees can be appreciated, but only when the students aren't on campus and when it won't inconvenience them in any way.

Instead universities often treat the staff (as distinct from upper level administrators, who are often very visible) like the 'downstairs' of an old aristocratic English household: best not really heard nor soon; let us just all pretend the day-to-day runs itself.

Maybe, but some of the smarter students might… The staff in the Physics office when I was going to college made sure I could get into any class I wanted to register for, full or not, thanks to me stopping by with donuts on a regular basis beginning my 2nd or 3rd sophomore year.
