So my university does an 'employee appreciation day' which is seemingly always scheduled for fall break. So, you know, employees can be appreciated, but only when the students aren't on campus and when it won't inconvenience them in any way.

Students often have no idea how much work staff put in to keeping everything running and having a day to foreground that work - departmental staff, registrars, bursers, grounds and dining staff, facilities, etc. - *in front of the students* would be valuable.

Instead universities often treat the staff (as distinct from upper level administrators, who are often very visible) like the 'downstairs' of an old aristocratic English household: best not really heard nor soon; let us just all pretend the day-to-day runs itself.
