I don't much mind for faculty. You get often get appreciated for good teaching directly (the latest being a student email informing me that my "class fucking rocked" which was nice). But for *staff* that do a lot of the hidden work of making everything run, it is pretty lame.

Students often have no idea how much work staff put in to keeping everything running and having a day to foreground that work - departmental staff, registrars, bursers, grounds and dining staff, facilities, etc. - *in front of the students* would be valuable.

Instead universities often treat the staff (as distinct from upper level administrators, who are often very visible) like the 'downstairs' of an old aristocratic English household: best not really heard nor soon; let us just all pretend the day-to-day runs itself.
