I was always struck by the Latin age-term arrangement, which pretty clearly embeds Roman gender-values: puella = pre-marriage mulier = married/window while: adulescens = almost/just barely military aged, 16-20 iuvenis = military age, 20-40 senex = post-military age, 40+
