Is it accurate to describe Julius Caesar as being kind of a fool as a politician compared to his incomparably masterful nephew and successor?
'A fool' is a bit much, but I'd certainly say that Octavian had the better political sense (but was a far more mediocre military commander compared to Caesar, arguably the best in Mediterranean antiquity)
About 6 months back, I read Rome's Revolution: Death of the Republic and Birth of the Empire, by Richard Alston. The impression I got was that none of the major players in that period from about 50-30 were doing much more than desperately trying to survive the next 6 months
