The focus on time-in-Rome is why I tried to make the blue 'Italy' bits stand out. I'm sure I've made some chronological errors in there somewhere, but I think I've mostly got it correct. Anyway, feel free to use (with citation if you are putting it online) if it's helpful.

How common was this? The upper echelon of the US political class often wins office representing areas where connection is mostly family ties or they're returning after long absences, i.e. Hillary Clinton as NY senator or Liz Cheney. Did any Romans pull off what Caesar couldn't?
Roman politics generally must be done in person. Caesar can send messages back to Rome, but it is hard to build a good relationship with the Senate if you aren't there.

The time Ceasar masterfully extricated himself from a mess he stupidly bungled into in Egypt is one of the bigger unforced errors.
You mean the succession problem? I think it was a bold but clever move to join the political "alexandrian" dinasty. Rome was a republic and wouldn't accept any dynastic succession. The acceptance of Octavian was unexpected, and only achieved after a long crippling streak of wars.
