Its interesting seeing all of the They-Are-Billions-like games now coming out (Conan: Unconquered, Age of Darkness, Diplomacy is not an Option, also kind of Mindustry and Riftbreaker). They feel like a riff on tower defense games but also owe a fair bit of DNA to Stronghold.
...trapped in the killzone of my units and towers, but that was about it. I might keep old defensive lines as last resorts, but there was never a situation where my main battle position was well to the rear of my outer perimeter.

Huh, this is very near to the opposite of how I'd play. Generally I was expanding with militarized expansions, with a core of units doing the bulk of the damage and retreating as positions were overrun. It wasn't a big deal to lose a strictly military perimeter

I wouldn't generally be giving up civilian areas, that's a quick route to a death spiral, but I did feel like you needed to prepare to lose some defenses every big wave, and prepare to fight all the way to the core for the last day.
